Comparison – Algar vs. other Energy Sources
Our research indicates that Algar Geothermal’s technology has the lowest Life Cycle carbon footprint of any of the worlds most commonly used energy sources, including solar and wind. This chart shows GHG emissions in grams per kwh from some commonly used energy sources.
Electrical power produced by natural gas in blue is the highest carbon footprint at 490.0 grams of CO2eq/kilowatt hour. Space heating via natural gas is next at 200 grams of CO2eq/kilowatt hour. Renewables in light orange are much lower, with Algar Geothermal estimated to be 10.5 grams of CO2eq/kilowatt hour.
Algar is estimated to be the lowest and, with operational experience, may achieve near zero when Carbon Credits are applied.

Key reasons for geothermal energy’s low carbon footprint:
- No combustion: Unlike fossil fuels, geothermal power plants do not burn substances to generate electricity. This eliminates the direct release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. 1. Geothermal FAQs | Department of Energy www.energy.gov
- Continuous operation: Geothermal energy is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather conditions. This reduces the need to rely on intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind power, which can lead to increased reliance on fossil fuels during periods of low output. 1. - Long lifespan: Geothermal power plants have a long lifespan, often exceeding 50 years. This reduces the need for frequent construction and decommissioning, which can have environmental impacts. 1. Frequently asked questions about geothermal energy – Enel Green Power www.enelgreenpower.com
