This is a systemic challenge that requires a pragmatic, economic response. We do not view these wells as mere liabilities. Instead, we see them as pre-drilled pathways to a renewable, eternally available energy source: geothermal heat. Our goal is to transform unused infrastructure into productive, clean energy sources for local businesses.

Repurposing the Past: The Innovation of Geothermal Heat

Our approach is distinct and focused. We do not produce electricity. Instead, we focus on "heat-only" geothermal energy. Many of Alberta’s out-of-service wells reach depths where the subsurface temperature is ideal for direct heating applications.

By circulating fluids through these existing wellbores, we can extract heat to support a variety of industries. This process avoids the high costs and risks associated with drilling new wells from scratch. It allows us to leverage the billions of dollars already invested in Alberta’s subsurface infrastructure. Consequently, we can provide a low-cost, sustainable energy solution that helps local businesses stay competitive in a global market.

Building the "Glass City" of the Canadian Prairies

The term "Glass City" is inspired by the Westland region in the Netherlands. This area is home to a massive concentration of high-tech greenhouses that produce a significant portion of the world’s vegetables. The Dutch model proves that a concentrated ecosystem of growers, researchers, and technology providers can create immense economic value.

Alberta has the potential to replicate this success. We have the land, the sunlight, and most importantly, the heat. By creating geothermal hubs around clusters of repurposed wells, we can foster a "Glass City" in southern Alberta. This would enable year-round vegetable production, reducing our dependence on imports and providing Albertans with fresher, more nutritious food.

The scale of European greenhouse operations is vast. To put it in perspective, consider the total area of greenhouses in the Netherlands compared to major urban centers.

Our primary goal is to complete a pilot project in southern Alberta in 2026. This pilot will serve as a proof-of-concept, demonstrating the technical and economic viability of using repurposed wells for greenhouse heating. However, we cannot do this alone. We require:

  • Federal and Provincial Funding: We are actively engaging with Canada's Energy and Environmental Ministers to secure the capital needed for this transition.
  • Industry Commitments: We need the Alberta Oil and Gas industry to partner with us by providing access to out-of-service wells and subsurface data.
  • Community Partnership: We are targeting members of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association to participate as heat customers and project partners.
