Solution Development using the OLGA dynamic multiphase flow simulator

Algar has been working with SLB for 7 years using their OLGA dynamic multiphase flow simulator for solution development. We used OLGA to model effective ways to obtain heat energy from a closed loop coaxial well bore.

Initial results demonstrated that heat gathered at the bottom of the coaxial wellbore was being lost as the fluid returned to the top of the well.

20 different simulations were completed which allowed us to optimize our process. These simulations allowed Algar to develop several key innovations which are now held as Algar Geothermal’s intellectual property. (Learn more about the Olga dynamic multiphase flow simulator here)

Innovations in Solution Development

Drill pipe

These innovations addressed the following issues:

Developing a process that can minimize pumping power demand

Overcoming the heat loss in the upper section of the well and optimizing heat recovery in the lower, hotter section of the well

Determining the optimum injection temperatures and flow rates under different operating conditions

Creating an innovative vessel to store heat during periods of low demand

Based in Alberta

Being based in Alberta has many advantages. Algar has benefited from a highly skilled drilling and completions workforce, drilling equipment, and highly available drilling materials. Alberta’s drilling databases provide detail knowledge of drilling practices, geology, and temperature gradients.
Our Advisory Committee of Alberta based, highly skilled energy experts has helped Algar prepare workflows, select equipment and advise Algar on other critical activities and strategies.
